Fracking the System is a documentary that was released earlier this year detailing the oil and gas wars polluting Colorados citizens and government. I was tasked with curating a film poster for the documentary. My final design exposes the invisible threat humanity faces with a FLIR cameras viewfinder covering most of the poster.

Fracking the System

the process

My original design consisted of a stack releasing pollutants into the air with the faces of protestors and children emerging from the smoke. I wanted to emphasize the effect on the most vulnerable populations (children), as well as highlight the work that people have done to raise awareness and protest this issue. I included pictures from stock photos that I was going to replace with screen grabs from the movie and then lowered their opacity so it seemed as though they were stuck within the pollution. But after meeting with the client he thought it seemed too similar to another famous documentary on climate change, so I scrapped this idea.

For my next design, I decided on going with a concept that connected both oil and gas as well as the “seeping” of the problem into people's lives. I hung a large oil droplet under the “F” and only by looking through the drop could you see the pollution. I believe this design was successful, but definitely needed some tweaking and finessing. The background was too bright and didn’t create enough contrast. Also, the droplet was not the clients favorite idea, and everything being on the left side of the poster was also throwing him off. After taking his critiques, I scratched the droplet idea and eventually landed on my final design.
